12/15/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight was the final meeting of the semester. We spent some time doing a critique of all the final projects- the Board Games. After that I dismissed the class while I graded the final projects, the semester portfolios, and a few late arriving projects from past weeks. All work that was unclaimed at the end of the night was placed on a marked shelf (2D Bonelli), the top one just to the left of the classroom door. Inside each pad/pile is a grade slip with the grades for the final project and portfolio, and your attendance. I can't guarantee the long term safety of work on the shelves, so if you care about getting your art back, try to get it as soon as possible.

Final grades will be calculated in the next few days and submitted to the school. They'll be available when the school makes them so.

Enjoy the break.

12/8/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight the class filled out the course evaluation forms, and we looked at a few late arriving palettes and collage projects. Otherwise the rest of the evening was spent working on class related projects- for most students that was the board game project started last week.

***************Semester Portfolio****************

Next week the semester portfolio will be graded. This consists of all the work that has not been otherwise collected and graded. If you haven't missed any classes, you should have it all done. The following items are expected to be part of it, along with the dates each can be found on this blog.

9/15/11- wallpaper patterns in dots
9/22/11- contour line shoe drawings
10/6/11- value drawings (charcoal or conte crayon)
10/20/11- color wheel and color mixes
10/27/11- words and logos
11/22/11- color still life painting

Homework- Nothing new, but several students still owe the palettes or collage project, and of course the Board Game Final Project is due at the beginning of class on December 15, 2011.

For next class 12/15/11- Our final grading day. If you want to be safe, bring everything you did for this class this semester, but at least have the above portfolio items and your final project. If you still owe a back project, bring those as well. Anything that is not turned in next week for grading will be worth zero points. We will have a critique of the final projects, then I will dismiss the class for a while I finish grading everything. Students will be able to return later during the class to pick up all the graded work.

Today's Class- Tonight we looked at completed projects, first the limited palettes paintings, then the mixed media collages. After a break, we introduced the final project of the semester, a board game based on the artwork of a well known fine artist.

How to make this up- You will need to select an artist, someone from the world of fine art (appearing in art history textbooks, major museum collections, etc) who works representationally and in color. The assignment is to design a board game based on the paintings of one artist- using the specific images of the artist in a new composition of your own. Above and below are examples from previous semesters, with the title of the game and the source fine artist. Another example, with explanation of how it was created, as well as all the specific instructions for the project in general, can be found here.

Homework- This game board final project is due at the beginning of class on December 15, 2011, which is our last day of class. Those who still owe back projects, such as the color temperature collage, the mixed media collage, or the limited color palettes, should get them completed as soon as possible to receive partial credit.

For next class 12/8/11- We will likely look at a few more late arriving projects, but otherwise the class period can be used to work on anything related to this class. Most will use the time to work on the final project, but you may also use the time to make up any back work. If you know that you missed class meetings and aren't sure if you made things up yet, check back through the blog archives.

2D Design Still Life Painting Exercise

How to make this up- Set up the still life. Put a box on a table, drape with a multicolored cloth. Find 3 solidly colored objects (each a different color from the others and the cloth) and arrange them on and around the boxes. Produce a painting of the still life using your acrylic paints on a sheet of your 18" x 24" paper. As with previous still life projects, pay attention to the individual shapes of objects, their relative position and proportion, but to that add the idea of matching both exact color and value. You may sketch with pencil first, or just paint directly on the page. For the background you can use any color you like. Above are a few examples from previous semesters.

This is a portfolio exercise, which must be made up by the end of the semester to receive full credit.

11/17/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Today we started a new graded project involving mixed media collage. We looked at a few historical slides of collage precedents, as well as some student examples from previous semesters, then students chose their collage subjects. We also looked at a few more of the season collages and some of the Russian word text exercise that we had done a few weeks ago.

How to make this up- The first step in the project is to receive the randomly generated phrase that will be the subject of your collage. Students in class received these by picking slips of paper with words from different bags. You may either e-mail me and I'll send you a phrase, or wait until our next class and select one yourself. Previous examples include City of Zoo (above) and Everything Turns to Thinking (below). The full details of the project and additional student examples can be found here.

Homework- This mixed media collage project is due at the beginning of class on December 1, 2011. The limited palettes color project that we started in class last week is also due on December 1st.

If you still owe me the season temperature collage or the woodcut block, try to get them in as soon as possible to still receive some partial credit.

For next class November 22, 2011. That's right, our next meeting will be Tuesday, November 22nd, to make up for the Thanksgiving holiday. We will do a portfolio exercise related to classic still life painting. Bring your 18" x 24" pad, pencil and eraser, paints, brushes, palette, palette knife, and water container.

11/10/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight we started a new graded project related to color combinations, sometimes referred to as an artist's palette. Sometimes artists will try to closely match all the original colors in a scene they are painting, but at other times they will purposely choose different colors to achieve a different feeling. We looked at some art historical examples of paintings using some common types of combinations, then started on the project. We reserved time at the end of class to look at the color temperature collages started last week.

How to make this up- You will need to find a black and white photograph of an actual thing or scene, with a wide range of value from light to dark. Use pencil to divide a sheet of your 18" x 24" paper into 4 equal boxes. Do a compositional sketch of your photo in all four boxes, then use your acrylic paints to color each version of the composition, using some specific formats. Above are two student examples from previous semesters. The full details regarding the types of color combinations, and further student examples can be found here.

Homework- This limited palettes graded project is due at the beginning of class on December 1, 2011. We will be starting a new graded project next week, so I suggest making some progress on this one before then.

For next class 11/17/11- We will be starting a new graded project involving mixed media collage. Bring your 18" x 24" paper, pencil and eraser, markers, acrylic paints, brushes, palette, palette knife, water container, glue, and scissors.

11/3/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Today we started a new graded project involving color temperature. I showed a selection of art historical slides, and we discussed whether the overall perceived color temperature of each was warm, cool, or balanced/neutral. After that students began mixing colors for the project. We saved time at the end of class to have a critique of the woodcut prints that were pulled last week.

How to make this up- You will be creating a pair of collages, each reflecting the overall temperatures associated with two of the seasons of the year, as in the example above. Full instructions and additional student examples can be found here.

Homework- This color temperature collage graded project is due at the beginning of class next week, November 10, 2011. Anyone who has not yet turned in their completed wood block should complete it as soon as possible and bring it to class to be printed.

For next week 11/10/11- We will be starting a new graded project involving specific color combinations. Bring your 18" x 24" pad, pencil and eraser, acrylic paints, brushes, palette, palette knife, and water container. You will be working from a black and white photograph, so either bring one of your own or be prepared to pick through my pile of magazines to find one.

10/27/10 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight we started the class by looking at slides of art through history that made use of text as a visual element and/or for its meaning. We also looked at examples of advertising through the 20th century, discussing how text was used (fonts, colors), symbolism, and general visual appeal. Based on that, students did two related portfolio exercises. While that was going on, I helped students individually print their wood blocks.

How to make this up- No one missed class tonight, so everyone should know the assignments- the descriptively drawn words and the business logos. However, if you want a reminder of what we did, the specifics and a few examples can be found here.

Homework- Nothing new, but if anyone still owes any back projects, try to complete them as soon as possible. Those who did not have their block in class tonight should finish them by next week and bring them in.

For next class 11/3/11- We will critique the prints pulled tonight, and start a new graded project involving color temperature. Bring your 18" x 24" pad, pencil and eraser, paints, palette, palette knife, brushes, and water container, as well as scissors and glue.

10/20/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Today we began our study of color, which will factor into almost everything that we do the rest of the semester. We looked at examples of art in color, from cave paintings to comic books, discussing the evolution of color technology and materials, and how artists have used it for different effects. Then the class did some portfolio exercises involving color.

How to make this up- The class completed three exercises involving color theory and color mixing, as in the above example. The full instructions and additional student examples can be found here. Some of the steps are complicated, so if you find it too confusing, wait and discuss it with me in class next week, and devote your time to finishing your woodblock instead. These are portfolio exercises that must be made up by the end of the semester to receive credit.

Homework- Nothing new, but the woodcut blocks started in class last week are due next Thursday, October 27, 2011, at the beginning of class. If you still owe one of the previous graded assignments, get it done as soon as possible.

For next class 10/27/11- Students will work on a few text related portfolio exercises, while I help everyone print their woodblocks one at a time. Bring your 18" x 24" paper, pencil and eraser, black markers, and the completed woodblock.

10/13/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight the class started a new graded project- a black and white illustration from a literary source, done in the medium of woodcut. I showed slides of the history of printmaking over the past 600 years (relief, etching, lithography, etc), including work from contemporary artists, and student examples of this project from previous years. I distributed wood blocks to all present, and did a demonstration of safe and effective block cutting. Students spent the rest of the evening working out their designs on paper, and in some cases on the wood itself.

How to make this up- I will have wood available next week for anyone who missed tonight. Meanwhile, work on your design for the 8" x 6" piece of wood. Specific of the assignment and additional student examples can be found here.

Homework- The completed wood block graded project is due at the beginning of class on October 27, 2011. At that time I will help everyone print their blocks. I recommend that everyone work on the blocks before next week, in case you want to show me your progress or ask advice or technical questions.

For next class 10/20/11- We will begin our study of color. Bring your 18" x 24" pad, pencil and eraser, all your acrylic paints, brushes, palette knife, palette, and some kind of water container. We will do some portfolio exercises related to basic color theory.

10/6/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight we finished the basic drawing portion of our semester with a try at value drawing. I showed slides of art from Egyptian to contemporary, and we looked at how value has been used by artists to show volume and form, location, and to build space. After that students worked from a set up with their choice of charcoal or conte crayon. At the end of class I discussed what they'll need to prepare for next week.

How to make this up- Specific instructions and additional student examples for this assignment can be found here. This is a portfolio exercise and must be made up by the end of the semester to receive credit.

Homework- Nothing new, but anyone who still owes me the stipple drawing or the line drawing of the plant should try to complete it as soon as possible. The longer the delay in turning it in, the fewer points it will be worth.

For next class 10/13/11- We will start a new graded project, a black and white book illustration in the form of a woodcut print. I will provide the wood next week. Bring paper (a small sketchbook is fine, or your 18" x 24" pad if you prefer), pencil and eraser, and your various black markers. Also bring your x-acto knife in case you are able to start cutting. Before next week you should select the subject for your book illustration. The book can be fiction or non-fiction, novel, short story, or poem. No children's books, picture books, comic books. I suggest you bring the book itself with you for reference if possible.

9/29/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight we started with a critique of the stipple drawings, which were later graded and returned to the students. Then we completed the second graded project of the semester, a line drawing still life of a plant.

How to make this up- The project calls for doing a drawing from a large leafy plant on a full sheet of your 18" x 24" paper. For full details and additional student examples, click here. This is a graded project and must be made up as soon as possible.

Homework- Nothing new, but if you haven't yet completed your stipple drawing or need to make up tonight's drawing, I advise completing the assignments as soon as possible, as the longer the delay in turning it in, the lower your grade will be.

For next class 10/6/11- We will conclude the basic drawing portion of our semester with a portfolio exercise in value drawing. Bring your 18" x 24" pad, either black conte crayon or charcoal, erasers, and spray fixative.

9/22/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight we did some portfolio exercises involving contour line drawing. First we looked at some slides of historical art, seeing how lines were used by artists for various purposes. Then the students did a series of drawing exercises involving shoes.

How to make this up- No one was absent tonight, but if someone misplaces their work before the portfolio grading and needs to redo it, full details and student examples can be found here.

Homework- The stipple drawings that were begun in class last week are due at the beginning of class on September 29, 2011. I will need the original photo in order to grade the drawings.

For next class 9/29/11- After we critique the stipple drawings, the class will do a graded drawing involving line. Bring your 18"x 24" pad, pencils, and eraser, along with the completed homework.

9/15/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight we began our study of art with the most basic unit of mark making, the point or dot. We did a portfolio exercise involving making patterns with dots, then started a graded project using dots to simulate photographic values.

Wallpaper exercise
For the wallpaper exercise, students used dots to create repeating patterns. I showed a few examples to everyone to illustrate some concepts about how different combinations of dots have different visual impacts.

Stipple Drawing Project

Most of the class period was spent working on our first graded project of the semester, a stipple drawing, which is a value drawing made of nothing but tiny dots of ink. The drawings were based on photographs, either brought in by the students or from my supply of magazines. For the full details and additional examples of completed projects, click here.

Homework- the completed stipple drawing, along with the original photo, is due at the beginning of class on September 29, 2011.

For next class 9/22/11- We will start our study of line. Bring your 18" x 24" pad, pencils, and eraser. We will be doing exercises involving contour line drawings of shoes, so you must provide your own. Either bring in an extra shoe or be prepared to remove one from your foot.

9/8/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight was the first class meeting of the semester. The syllabus was distributed and reviewed with the whole class. Then all the students filled out a survey about their past art experiences and interests.

Homework- none

For next class 9/15/11- We will start our study of 2D art with the most basic unit, the point or dot. Bring your 18"x24" pad, pencils, eraser, and ultra fine point and larger black markers. If you have a sketchbook, it might be useful. One project will be based on a black and white photo of your choosing. I will have some magazines to look through, but if you want to save some time, bring one of your own.

Welcome to the Fall 2011 Semester

This is the blog that I have set up for my classes at OCC. Each week I'll post information about what was done during class. The title of each post will have the date and the name of the class. For my 2D Design (ARTS 184-E-01) class, the text will be in blue.

Each week I'll provide a list of what was done, including a detailed description of any art exercises or projects from that class. The description will include photos of student examples of the project, if available and applicable. I will also include due dates for homework, and a list of the materials required for the following class. If there is any other important information, it will also be there. About a month's worth of postings will be seen on the main page, but earlier ones can be accessed through the archives on the right.

The main purpose of this is to provide information to students who miss a class- you can catch up on what you missed faster, maybe even before returning to class. However, the site will be useful to students who never miss a class, but just want a reminder of when something is due, or what is needed for the next week. The information is available to you 24/7, without having to wait for me to reply to an e-mail, though if you still need further explanation, you are welcome to contact me directly and I'll likely get back to you before the day is out.

5/12/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight was the final class meeting of the semester. Everyone in the class presented their Board Game project, then I dismissed everyone while I graded those, the semester portfolios, and any back owed projects. Most returned to pick up their graded work, but for those who didn't I put everything on the top shelf of the horizontal shelves closest to the classroom door. I can't guarantee how long things will stay there, so if you want your work back, I recommend picking it up as soon as possible.

Final class grades have been posted to WebAdvisor. Enjoy the summer..

5/5/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Other than filling out the class evaluation forms and looking at a few late arriving collage projects, the class period was devoted to working on the Board Game final project.

Semester Portfolio- Next week as part of the final grading process I will be grading the semester portfolio- all the work done in class that was not an individually graded project. The following items (with the dates they can be seen on this blog- use the archives at the right to access the earlier months) are expected to be part of it:

2/3/11 Wallpaper patterns with dots
2/10/11 Contour Lines (shoes)
2/24/11 Value study (charcoal)
3/10/11 Color Wheel and color mixing
3/24/11 Text as a visual element/ logo design
4/21/11 Color still life painting

Homework- Nothing new, but some students still owe me a few back projects, such as the limited color palettes and the various collages. Any overdue projects not turned in next week will be worth zero points. The Board Game project is due at the beginning of class May 12, 2011.

For next class 5/12/11- We will hold a group critique of the Board Game Final Project at the start of class, and then I will dismiss everyone for a while while I grade those, the semester portfolio, and any back projects. Graded work will be available to be picked up later during our class period.

2011 Student Juried Art Exhibit

Coming up later this month is the first Annual Student Juried Art Show. Here is all the information that I have as of now-

Students may submit as many artworks as they want for the exhibition. There are no entry fees for the show. The art for the show must have been completed within the last academic year (Fall 2010 to Spring 2011), and can be something made in class or on your own.

Drop-off will be Wednesday May 11th in ACC B128 (our classroom)
There is an entry form to be filled out and attached to the back of each work you wish to enter. These forms should be available in the art studio classrooms. If not, check with any available studio professor.

Jurying will be May 12th and May 13th
Rejected work should be picked up Monday May 16th (last day of classes this semester)

Rejected work that is not claimed may be disposed of over the summer.

The exhibition will open with a reception on Thursday May 26th, at 4:00 pm. The show will remain on display until the fall semester.

The juror will award prizes in the amounts of $200, $100, and $50.

If I learn any more details I will post them here.

Board Game Project

The Project- For this project you will base a board game on the work of a specific artist. The artist should be one who has achieved significant art world recognition, such as appearing in art history survey textbooks, or be included in the collections of major museums. (check with me if you're not sure) The work must be representational. The above sample game is based on the art of 14th century painter Hieronymus Bosch. Bosch's work usually had religious and moralistic themes, and this game adapts a common theme of his- the sinful nature of mankind and the possibility of eternal punishment in the afterlife.

The board design should not just be a copy of a single painting with a game path on it, but rather an original design that makes use of images from the artist's painting(s). The above game borrows images from two Bosch paintings- "The Garden of Earthly Delights" and "The Last Judgment". All the visual elements (except possibly the game path) on the game board should come from your artist, but the compositional design should be yours. The game should have a theme/goal related in some way to the chosen artwork.

All games should have a path of some kind. It can be a one-way start to finish path (such as in Candyland), a continuous loop that is repeated until conditions result in a winner (such as Monopoly), or something where players can move in multiple directions (such as chess). Rules for moving should be worked out, such as the use of dice, a spinner, or drawn cards. The game board must include the name of your game somewhere in the design. You must provide tokens to represent the game players. You can make some special for the game, or repurpose tokens from another game.

The game board should be made of mat board or illustration board, and must be able to fold in half like traditional game boards. Recommended sizes are between 16" x 16" and 18" x 24", but you can make it a little bigger if you prefer.  Below are additional student examples, including the name of the inspiring artist.

4/21/11 2D Design

Today's Class- We opened class today with a critique of the limited color palette projects. After that we looked at a few slides of still life painting and discussed some of the roles it has played in history. Then I set up a still life and had students paint it as an exercise in specific color matching.

How to make this up- Set up the still life. Place a small box on a table and drape with a multicolored cloth (sheet, tablecloth, etc). Put 3 solidly colored objects (each a different color from the others and the drape) on and around the box. Paint the set up on a sheet of your 18" x 24" paper. You may sketch it out in pencil first, or just paint directly from observation if you prefer. Like previous still life assignments in this class, pay attention to the shapes, relative size and positions of the objects, but now also deal with matching colors from the set up- hue, intensity, value, etc. In class we spent about 2.5 hours working on it. Above are two examples from previous semesters.

This is a portfolio exercise that must be made up by the end of the semester to receive credit.

Homework- The mixed media collage projects started last week are due at the beginning of class next week, April 28, 2011. Anyone who still hasn't received their random phrase subject from me should e-mail me as soon as possible. Students who still owe season temperature collages and/or limited palette studies should get them in as soon as possible to receive partial credit.

For next class 4/28/11- We will begin the Final Project of the semester. Bring all your painting related materials, pencil and eraser. The project will be based on works from art history, so bring with you a book with color reproductions of a favorite artist, art movement/historical period, subject, or if you have no preferences, a general book about painting or art history. The art in question must be representational. We will use mat board for the project, of which there is a supply in the classroom, but I recommend also bringing paper of your own for sketching out the project. We will also critique the mixed media collages.

4/14/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Today we looked at the completed season/temperature collages, deciding if the declared seasons matched the colors presented. Then we started a new graded project partly inspired by the Dada art movement of the early 20th century. Students drew random words from bags to form a phrase, and then used that phrase as the subject of mixed media collage. Examples from previous semesters include "City of Zoo" (above) and "Everything Turns to Thinking" (below)

How to make this up- In order to start, you'll need a randomly drawn phrase from the bags. You may either e-mail me and have me draw it for you, or wait until class next week and pick from the bags yourself. For the rest of the details and to see further student examples, click here.

Homework- The limited color palettes project that we started last week is due at the beginning of class next week April 21, 2011.

The Dada inspired collage project is due at the beginning of class on April 28, 2011.

Those who still owe wood blocks and the season/temperature collage should get them in as soon as possible to receive partial credit.

For next class 4/21/11- Bring the completed homework, your 18" x 24" pad, all the painting related materials, pencil and eraser. We will do a portfolio exercise involving still life painting.

4/7/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight we started a new graded project involving specific color combinations, sometimes referred to as an artist's palette. Sometimes artists will choose colors that are not based on the local colors of objects/scenery or just random combinations, but rather colors that have specific relationships. We looked at examples of fine art, discussing the effect of different color strategies in each. After that, students started on the project, a few examples of which are shown above.

How to make this up- Start by using pencil to divide a sheet of your 18" x 24" paper into 4 equal quadrants. Choose a black and white photograph that has a wide range of value tones and a subject that you feel comfortable drawing. Sketch the composition of the photo in all four parts of the paper, then color each with your acrylic paints using 4 different palette options. To see additional student examples and read the full detailed directions, click here.

Homework- This Limited Color Palettes graded project is due at the beginning of class on April 21, 2011. The Color Temperature (Seasons) project started last week is due at the beginning of class on April 14, 2011.

For next class 4/14/11- We will start a new graded project involving mixed media collage. Bring your 18" x 24" pad, pencil and eraser, all painting related materials, markers, scissors, and glue. Also bring the completed Color Temperature collage.

Thursday, March 31, 2011

3/31/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight we started a new graded project relating to the concept of color temperature. I showed a short selection of slides of historical fine art and we debated whether the overall color balance in each was warm, cool, or balanced. After that students began mixing colors for the project, an example of which from a previous semester is shown above. While this was going on, we printed more wood blocks. At the end of class we finally had a critique of all the woodcut prints.

How to make this up- To see the full instructions and more student examples of the color temperature collage graded project, click here.

Homework- The color temperature project is due at the beginning of class on April 14, 2011, however I strongly recommend that you try to finish it (especially the color mixing part) by next week, as we will start a new graded project next week.

For next class 4/7/11- We will start a new graded project involving specific color combinations. Bring your 18" x 24" pad, acrylic paints, brushes, palette, palette knife, water container, pencil, and eraser. The project will require you to work from a black and white photograph, so either bring one with you, or settle for what you can find in the pile of magazines I bring in.

3/24/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Today we considered the role that text can play in visual arts, seeing examples from art history of words and letters in two dimensional art. We also looked at examples of advertising through the 20th century, discussing the associations with different styles of text and symbolism in the images. Following the slides, students did two exercises involving text and logos. While that was going on, I helped the students print their completed woodcuts.

How to make this up- The full directions and some student examples can be found here. These are portfolio exercises that must be made up by the end of the semester to receive credit.

Homework- nothing new, but those who did not print their wood blocks tonight should bring them to class as soon as possible.

3/10/11 2D Design

Today's Class- Tonight we started our study of color, which will factor into almost everything we do the rest of this semester. We looked at slides of art from cave painting through comic books, discussing the use and effects of color in each. After that we did a series of portfolio exercises involving basic color theory and mixing.

How to make this up- Students did 3 exercises on one piece of paper; a color wheel, a complementary color mix, and a series of tints and shades of a single hue, as in the example above. Complete directions and further student examples can be found here. If the directions are too confusing, wait and ask me about it next time you come to class. These are portfolio exercises that must be made up by the end of the semester.

Homework- The completed cut wood blocks for our woodcut project are due at the beginning of class on March 24, 2011.

*****Spring Break March 14 to March 20, 2011*****

Student Art Show- There will be a student art show held in the Arts and Community Center from March 21 to April 29, 2011. Students who are interested in participating should see Bobbi Krantz in room A 103 (behind the box office in the theatre wing)

For next class 3/24/11- We will work on a few portfolio exercises involving text as a visual element, and I will assist students in printing their wood blocks. Bring your 18" x 24" pad, pencil and eraser, markers, and the completed wood block.
